Old Age Homes and Senior Citizens

OLD AGE HOMES AND SENIOR CITIZENS:  Many old age homes have been left stranded because of the delay by the Department of Social Development for not paying subsidies before lockdown. Research shows that older adults are at significantly greater risk of complications from the Corona Virus with fatalities increasing significantly with age due to reduced immunity and the increased likelihood of existing chronic illnesses. It is a huge risk for the senior citizens to go out and be exposed to this deadly virus. During these challenges Community Chest supported various Old Age Homes in the metro with food parcels and supplied bulk food items to those who provide meals to their residents.

Apart from the old age homes there are many of our senior citizens who struggle to survive on their old age pension. According to the University of Cape Town, 70% of older people in South Africa receive old age grants, and research shows older women use this income to support unemployment and underemployed relatives.

We worked closely with our Home Base Carers to supply food parcels to these senior citizens. We will continue supplying these services and contribute to the wellbeing of our senior citizens.

Please assist us to continue our services to them by pledging a small donation of R30.00 towards a plate of food.
