Community Chest & DG Capital Mandela Day 2026

Mandela Day 2026: Turning 67 Minutes into Lasting Impact
Every year, Mandela Day reminds us that meaningful change starts with small, intentional actions. In 2026, Community Chest, in partnership with DG Capital, is calling on businesses, organisations, and individuals to step forward and make a tangible difference in Gqeberha.
This year’s initiative focuses on two community institutions that play a vital role in supporting vulnerable groups, Heatherbank Primary School and Malabar Old Age Home. Each project offers a unique opportunity to give back, whether through hands-on volunteering, material sponsorship, or simple acts of human connection.
Supporting Young Minds at Heatherbank Primary School
Located in Theescombe, Heatherbank Primary School provides free education to around 280 children from Walmer Township. For many of these learners, the school is more than a place of education. It is a safe space that nurtures growth, stability, and hope.
However, maintaining this environment requires ongoing support. This Mandela Day, volunteers will come together to revitalise the school through painting and refurbishment, upgrading ablution facilities, and enhancing outdoor spaces.
A key focus will be the development of a safe and engaging playground. Plans include repairing and installing equipment, creating shaded areas, and laying down child-friendly surfaces. These improvements will not only enhance the physical space but also contribute to the wellbeing and development of every child who learns there.
Beyond infrastructure, there are opportunities to donate essential items such as stationery, books, sports equipment, and gardening supplies to support a sustainable vegetable garden.
Bringing Comfort and Connection to Malabar Old Age Home
At Malabar Old Age Home, the focus shifts from infrastructure to dignity and companionship. This project is ideal for teams who want to combine practical support with meaningful human interaction.
Volunteers will assist with repainting common areas and completing light maintenance work to improve the living environment. At the same time, the heart of this initiative lies in spending time with residents.
Simple moments can have a lasting impact. Sharing a conversation, hosting a music session, or sitting down for tea can bring warmth and connection to those who need it most.
Organisations are also encouraged to contribute “treat packs” for residents, including snacks, toiletries, and warm essentials such as blankets, socks, and beanies.
A Collective Effort for Greater Impact
What makes this initiative powerful is the opportunity for collaboration. Companies can send volunteer teams, sponsor materials, donate goods, or partner with other organisations to maximise their impact.
Site walkthroughs can be arranged in advance, allowing teams to understand the needs on the ground and align their contributions effectively. This ensures that every effort on Mandela Day is purposeful and leaves a lasting legacy.
How to Get Involved
Getting involved is simple and flexible:
Register your interest with your organisation details, number of volunteers, and preferred project
Attend a site visit to plan your contribution
Confirm your materials, logistics, and team participation
Join the coordinated Mandela Day effort on Friday, 17 July 2026
Whether you have a team of two or fifty, your contribution matters.
More Than a Day of Service
“Mandela Day is more than a moment. It is a movement of collective action. By coming together, we can create spaces of dignity for our elders and opportunity for our children, reminding every beneficiary that they are seen, valued, and supported.”
Mandela Day is not just about giving time. It is about creating impact that lasts well beyond a single day. Through shared effort and commitment, we can help build stronger, more caring communities.
