Seventy-four years ago, a small but determined organisation planted its roots in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro with a simple, powerful belief: that communities grow stronger when people choose to show up for one another. Today, the Community Chest of the Eastern Cape celebrates 74 years of doing exactly that, and the impact speaks for itself.

One Feather. One Community. One Purpose.

The Red Feather has always meant something. Long before it became the symbol of Community Chest, it represented courage, service, and achievement, values that have guided this organisation through every decade of its journey.

First adopted as a local Community Chest symbol in 1928 and later recognised nationally in 1945, the Red Feather today stands as an emblem of united health and welfare campaigns. For 74 years, it has flown proudly over the Eastern Cape, a quiet promise to every vulnerable person in our communities that they are not alone.

A Legacy Built on Compassion

From supporting young learners who need a safe space to grow, to bringing dignity and warmth to our elders, Community Chest has remained unwavering in its mission. The work has never been easy, but the commitment has never wavered.

Across seven decades, the organisation has served as a lifeline, mobilising donors, volunteers, and partners to respond to the real, everyday needs of people across the region. Whether it's emergency relief, education, food security, or shelter, Community Chest has consistently shown up where it matters most.
