Keeping Hunger at Bay
Summary
Mum Nancy Neliswa Soyeye dedicates five days a week to feeding the homeless community of Forest Hill, operating through her organisation, Silithemba Labadala. The 76-year-old has been running a soup kitchen since 2019, serving approximately 45 to 50 people daily.
What we've done.
With support from the Community Chest, Soyeye ensures that nutritious meals, comprising soup or rice with vegetables, are prepared each weekday. Sandy Abdoll, Project Manager of the Community Chest, emphasises the vital role organisations like Silithemba Labadala play in nourishing underprivileged communities, particularly the homeless. "Given the surge in homelessness, support for soup kitchens like these are crucial. Unemployment which leads to poverty is rife, and the Community Chest plays a key role in providing support to poverty stricken communities," says Abdoll.
In addition to supplying ingredients, Community Chest upgraded her kitchen with a new roof, new cupboards, appliances and catering equipment. “We are proud to be associated with Silithemba Labadala rendering this much needed service in her community,” says Adboll.
Grateful for the support from the Community Chest, Soyeye takes pride in her cooking. "I prepare large batches of food, incorporating fresh vegetables, herbs, and spices for flavor," she shares enthusiastically.
